The development of spinal motor neurons is accompanied by an increase in dendritic arbor followed by a period during which arbor is lost. This observation is thought to represent an activity-dependent elimination of dendritic segments. While the exact molecular mechanisms underlying these changes are unknown, glutamate receptors are implicated. Different subunits of the glutamate receptors are hypothesized to mediate different aspects of dendritic developemnt. Using time-lapse imaging, I aim to investigate the role of these receptors in determining the dendritic development of motor neurons.

Magnocellular neurons in the hypothalamus release oxytocin and vasopressin, which are involved in fluid homeostasis regulation. Morphological as well as electrophysiological studies suggest that there are upregulation of the glutamatergic innervation under chronic stimulation such as dehydration and lactation. Using molecular approach in combination with electrophysiological recording method, we want to know whether there are upregulation of the postsynaptic glutamate receptors and whether they contribute differently to excitability of oxytocin and vasopressin neurons.
